You know, normally, if I stumble across a blog post that I disagree with, think is stupid, or just otherwise don't like, I roll my eyes and close the window.

If they've really gotten my goat, I might make some sarcastic, snide remarks in passing to a couple of RL friends, but I seldom if ever post about it. I usually won't even bother commenting in the person's journal. For one thing, publicizing the stupidity of others just gets them more hits and gives them more of a self-righteous thrill; for another, I really do believe that everyone has the right to speak and believe as they wish.

However . . . this person has violated the concept of free speech so assiduously that I just can't bear it.

I'm probably late to the party as usual. I'm probably the last person on LJ to hear that supposedly, Joss Whedon is a rapist and misogynist who glories in the suffering of all womenkind.

I won't go into all the details that pissed me off, although I will mention that I disagree mightily with the author's stated belief that no woman is capable of consenting to sell sex. All prostitutes are, by definition, victims of rape each time a sex act is performed in exchange for money.

What made me batshit was her response to a commenter who took exception to the above stand: the writer announced that "any more pro-prostituion comments will be deleted[sic]."

That's muffling free speech, and that lights my fire in a major way.

I get it... it's her journal, she can do what she wants. She even posts a policy about it in her user info.

First of all, this journal is for women who have a genuine interest in women's rights and commitment to sisterhood. Discussion has always been a vital part of the development of the women's movement. If you disagree with something published here, please don't hesitate to say so unless your opinions fall under the banned comments section. If you do want to engage me in a discussion about something I have posted on my journal, please treat me with respect. You have every right to disagree, you have every right to tell me how and why, but you do not have the right to insult your own intelligence by attempting to insult mine. I am not easily offended and I will merely have a good laugh at your inanity before deleting your comment. So, don't be stupid if you actually want your comment to be published.

I love to have good discussions with other women who do not always agree with me. But I will not allow comments that are insulting, woman-hating or potentially silencing of women.

So free speech and disagreement is okay, as long as all you say is that you agree with her?

Whatever. I'm rolling my eyes so hard right now, they're about to fall out of my head.

It must be nice to have the time, the money, and the leisure to sit around all day getting hysterical over the plight of women in the world today, hm?

Because I'd be willing to bet money that if this chick was scraping by to make a living, maybe raising a family on her own, but doing something that doesn't involve a Gender Studies / Womyn Power double-major, she wouldn't have the energy, let alone the time, to watch so much TV with the sole and stated intent to prove that Joss Whedon has a penis and is therefore, not a female.
