I'd heard that SPN wasn't definitely renewed yet, so I was panicking.

Yeah, there are rumors both ways. But they filmed the ep well before they knew if they'd be renewed or not, so I have considerable hope that they didn't close off their options by making Sam stay an ex-Sam.
