redfirecrackerTwo women dressed in the most ill-fitting suits I have ever have the misfortune to see just walked by my office.
Word to the wise: if you are applying to medical school and have been fortunate enough to be invited on a tour of the facilities as part of your interview, PLEASE VISIT A TAILOR FIRST.
Seriously. It would've cost about twenty-five bucks to shorten those sleeves and dart the waist on that jacket the one chick was wearing. The other one was in a STRETCH KNIT ZIP-FRONT that was grossly inappropriate for a med school interview. She just needed a total makeover.
One of the guys was horribly underdressed as well, but it's unfortunate that larger women in particular seem to fall prey to these kinds of fashion violations.
I know what it's like to have trouble fitting a big body with clothes. It's one of the reasons I used to sew most of my own stuff.
And it's depressing to regularly go into one's closet and be unable to find something appropriate and well-fitted.
But anyone, and especially a large woman, should know that you CANNOT wait until the night before an event to discover you have nothing to wear. Major job interviews, weddings, funerals . . . all those events expect a particular type of attire. Wearing something obviously thrown together at the last second makes you look careless at best. At worst, it gives the impression that you are too selfish, too stupid, or lack enough self-worth to respect society's rules of behavior and dress.
I get that money can be tight: especially for someone applying for medical school. But if you spend all the money on getting here for an interview, including plane tickets, a hotel, possibly a rental car . . . what's another fifty or even a hundred bucks to make sure you're dressed appropriately for the occasion?
And how stupid are you going to feel, that you didn't get accepted into medical school because you cheaped out on clothes to look the part?
This lecture is mostly directed to the women, but man . . . I also desperately wanted to strangle the guy with the hideous tie, using his own neckwear! His ill-fitted khakis, too-casual corduroy blazer, and offensively wrinkled button-down shirt just made me cringe.
It makes me really sad to think that these women I saw are probably just too down on themselves to care enough about their appearances at an event that could determine their futures.

In the spirit of schadenfreude, I saw a woman in Blockbuster one night, who was not only in her pajamas and slippers, curlers in her hair, but who WAS ALSO WEARING HER BATHROBE.
I have a great deal of sympathy for your Aunt Lavinia, suddenly! ;)
